I have to have some form of self-awareness in the beginning stages of a relationship, so this isn’t a story where I was like, “It’s great you have a boyfriend and I’m just not into it, but my boyfriend is a very smart man, so I just need to know what I want,” so this is really true of any relationship.

This also applies to business relationships. Many entrepreneurs are faced with the choice of the day after a meeting with one of their prospective customers, whether or not to tell them about a deal that might be mutually beneficial. If a successful, established business owner is faced with this decision, the odds that they will have the self-awareness to say, “Hey, guys, I really don’t see how this could work out for us.

The point, as the old saying goes, is not to plan, but to have the clarity of your intentions. As a business owner, this is something that you have to think about every time you’re starting a new job.

Now you might be thinking, well, this is why I keep a ‘go’ folder in my filing cabinet. Just in case I forget to tell you when you’re supposed to meet me at a certain meeting. I’m not sure what I was expecting, but I also don’t want to make you feel embarrassed. For most businesses, this kind of thing happens all the time.

Mercimek is an all-day-everyday-and-night-if-the-weather-allows-it-type of job. So it happens that most of the time you dont even think about it. But if you do, it can be an awful lot of work. At least with this job, youre not running around your city doing things that dont give you any time to do the other things you have to do in your job.

Well, at least for most businesses, this kind of thing doesnt happen to you. But if you have to be a mechanic, or a doctor, or a lawyer, or a scientist, or a teacher, or a fireman, or a cop – whatever it is that youre supposed to do, youre going to be doing it until you die, or until your boss decides that your service is more important than your paycheck.

You see, with the right amount of self-awareness, youre able to say, “I’m going to do it.” And it might not be until later that you realize you’re not actually going to do it.

The fact is that to be a mechanic, or a doctor, or a lawyer, or a scientist, or a teacher, or a fireman – whatever it is youre supposed to do, youre going to be doing it until you die, or until your boss decides that your service is more important than your paycheck. You see, with the right amount of self-awareness, youre able to say, I will do it.

So how do you actually do it? You could say that you have a plan, or you have an idea, or that you have a goal in mind, but the next step is to actually do it. So the best way to do it, or the best way to learn to do it, or the best way to become a mechanic or a doctor or a lawyer, is to become aware of how youre doing it. By doing it, you become aware of the whole process.

I think most of us have some kind of story about how we got into a job. I could not have learned to drive or fly planes, or had any kind of medical qualifications, without having a story that helps explain how I got there. So if you want to get a job, learn to drive or fly planes, or become a mechanic or a lawyer, you’ll definitely need to have a story that explains how you got there.
